Grants

Providing financial support through research and development grants that will contribute to the growth of the interpreting profession is a crucial aspect of RID’s strategic objectives.

Currently, RID manages two established grant programs:

  1. Research Grant Program
  2. RID-NCIEC Mentoring Grant Program

Research Grant Program

The RID Board of Directors has approved funds to be distributed as supporting research grants for research projects conducted by its members. Depending on the number of applications received, RID may fund a single project or multiple projects.

Deadline for application: December 31

Significance and Innovation of the Project:

  • Address an important concern currently facing the profession
  • Expand the knowledge base within the discipline of American Sign Language interpreting
  • Have an innovative and/or original concept of significance to the field

The RID mentoring challenge grant program has been in place since 2000. Each year, affiliate chapters in RID regions have been able to apply for grants to support mentoring activities. In 2006, in addition to an overall review of the program, a collaborative effort began with the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC).

With NCIEC's involvement, funding for the program has grown considerably. Grants are generally awarded in the range of $3,000 to $8,000. An attempt is made to divide the funds among the five geographic regions. This is a great step forward in supporting sustainable, successful programming for mentoring.

In addition to RID affiliate chapters for whom the program began, deafness-related organizations, interpreter service agencies and other private firms are encouraged to gain support from a chapter and apply for these funds. There have been limited applications in the past for these funds. We would like to see many more!

The RID/NCIEC Mentorship Grant Program’s goals are to increase the skills of:

  • New interpreters
  • Interpreters from minority populations
  • Deaf interpreters or Deaf mentors
  • Interpreters in specialized settings
